Vonnegut and Storytelling

Kurt Vonnegut (who I started reading around middle school) has some great advice for storytelling. In my post this week on my character background, the arc that Roderick Rush has followed thus far is on the path for the “Cinderella” story arc. Rush’s story starts relatively low on the “happiness” line due to his personality. After he finds his place with ORION working in espionage and putting his potential to good use, Rush presumably got happier. Upon learning that ORION was not what he thought it was, Rush’s sense of purpose and happiness would have dropped. In the events since then, I would think he would be on the upward swing on the “happiness” line. Thinking of his story in terms of Vonnegut’s story arcs kind of makes me actually write more about Roderick Rush for fun.
